WHO: 5 More Ebola Vaccines to be Tested in Jan
London, Dhu-AlHijjah 30 , 1435,October 24 , 2014, SPA -- The World Health Organization (WHO) says millions of doses of two experimental Ebola vaccines could be ready in 2015 and five more experimental vaccines will start being tested in January, AP reported.
Still, the agency warned it's not clear whether any of these might work against the deadly virus that has killed over 4,800 people this year.
Dr. Marie-Paule Kieny from the agency told reporters there could be millions of doses of an Ebola vaccine in 2015 if early tests prove that the two leading candidates are safe and effective. Trials of those most advanced vaccines have already begun.
If those trials prove effective, larger trials testing the vaccines in West Africa could begin as soon as December, Kieny said. She said five other possible Ebola vaccines should start testing in January.

Ericsson Q3 Net Profit Dips 13 per cent
Stockholm, Dhu-AlHijjah 30, 1435, October 24, 2014, SPA -- Swedish telecommunications equipment maker Ericsson reported a 13-per-cent drop in third-quarter net profit on Friday.
The net profit of 2.6 billion kronor (357 million dollars) compared with 3 billion kronor in the corresponding period of 2013, dpa reported.
Higher spending on research and development, as well as costs for currency hedging of US dollars, weighed on results.
Net sales, however, rose 9 per cent year-on-year to 57.6 billion kronor, with stronger growth in China, India, the Middle East and Russia.
Sales were lower in North America as mobile operators in the region focused on "cash flow optimization," chief executive Hans Vestberg said.
The mainstay networks division accounted for well over half of Ericsson's sales, totalling 30 billion kronor, up 4 per cent on the previous quarter.
Ericsson said it had about 117,500 employees at the end of September, an addition of 2,100 people compared to the end of June.

Vaccine Trials for Ebola Are Planned in West Africa
Washington, Dhu-AlHijjah 30, 1435, Oct 24, 2014, SPA -- Federal officials and pharmaceutical companies are planning in the near future to start two large clinical trials of Ebola vaccines in West African countries devastated by the outbreak, a government official said Thursday.
The trials will run separately — one in Liberia, the other in Sierra Leone — and involve different designs to ensure at least one produces usable information.
“It’s very important to make sure that, given how challenging these trials might be, that we take no chances, that we have more than one trial going on,” this official said, speaking on condition of anonymity because the studies have not been formally announced.
The World Health Organization held a meeting in Geneva on Thursday involving governments, pharmaceutical companies and charities, among others, to discuss Ebola vaccine trials. Conclusions of the meeting are expected to be announced Friday.
W.H.O. officials said earlier this week that trials of two vaccines furthest along in development would start in West Africa as early as January. But the details have not been known.
