Riyadh, January 18, 2019, SPA -- Saudi newspapers highlighted in their editorials today a number of issues at local, regional and international arenas.
Al-Riyadh newspaper in its editorial focused on the Syrian crisis which has undergone several stages since its outbreak in 2011, in which maps and balances of forces have changed, and the roles of the players have been reversed, but the picture has never been the surrealism that the crisis has reached in the present day. The ambiguity envelops the positions of all actors, the most influential example of this confusion is the American position on the military withdrawal from Syria. After US President Donald Trump announced his country's intention to withdraw of what he described as the land of "sand and death," contradictory signals came from US officials and then from Trump himself about nature and the time span.
Al-Riyadh added the latest diplomatic clash between Washington and Ankara, where the transfer of language between the two countries to a new level threatened to destroy the Turkish economy after Turkey attacked the Syrian democratic forces, before returning later in a telephone conversation with the Turkish President to calm the tone and talk about the establishment of an area buffer zone in northern Syria meets Ankara's concerns.
The complexities of the Syrian situation do not allow any misreading. Syria is a regional ball of wool that mixes the accounts of the great and regional powers with separatist tendencies, transnational terrorism projects and any step in the wrong way will contribute to fueling the Syrian fire.
Al-Youm newspaper in its editorial said that the approval of the Constituent Assembly of the giant Neum Project under the chairmanship of His Royal Highness Prince Mohammed bin Salman bin Abdulaziz, Crown Prince, Vice President of the Council of Ministers, and Minister of Defense and Chairman of the Public Investment Fund, on the strategic concept of the "New Bay". The project is expected to be officially inaugurated by the end of this yea. In addition to transforming the existing airport in NEOM into a commercial airport to receive regular flights. The first phase of the Gulf will end next year. This vital project, which is at the forefront of the mega development projects directly linked to the ambitious vision of the Kingdom 2030, is one of the signs of renaissance in the Kingdom, where preparations are currently underway in the development stages to move to the stages of construction to prepare the area for living and work.
Okaz commented on the situation of Houthis by saying that last developments confirm that the militia is floundering on all levels, and lacks any elements that give it opportunities to engage in peace negotiations under UN supervision after all these violations and to continue to break the covenants and to reject the release of prisoners and abductees and to continue the approach of terrorist organizations in targeting international shipping lanes and laying mines in general roads and agricultural land, which is planned by the terrorist regime in Tehran with logistical and ideological support, and the lack of negotiation options with Houthi must unite the international situation and the United Nations in support of military options to eliminate this rogue gang.
