New York, March 31, 2020, SPA—U.S. stocks fell Tuesday, the final day of the first quarter, as investors concluded a period of historic market volatility sparked by the coronavirus pandemic.
The Dow industrials and broader Standard & Poor’s 500 had their worst first-quarter performances in history, losing 23.2 and 20 percent respectively. The Dow also had its worst overall quarter since 1987 while the S&P 500 had its biggest quarterly loss since 2008.
Wall Street also posted sharp losses for the month, with the Dow and S&P 500 losing 13.7 and 12.5 percent, respectively, in their worst one-month declines since 2008.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 410.32, or 1.8 percent, to 21,917.16.
The S&P 500 index fell 42.06, or 1.6 percent, 2,584.59.
The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 74.05, or 0.95 percent, to 7,700.10.
