New York, October 07, 2022, SPA -- U.S. stocks fell Thursday as traders considered sharp swings in equities and interest rates to start the month and awaited Friday’s U.S. employment report for September.
The Dow Jones industrial average fell 346.93, or 1.2 percent, to 29,926.94. Twenty-six of the index’s 30 components declined, led by 3M, which dropped 3.4 percent. IBM and Walgreens each lost 2.7 percent. Chevron led gainers, climbing 1.9 percent.
The broader Standard & Poor’s 500 index fell 38.76, or 1 percent, to 3,744.52. Energy was the best performing sector, gaining 1.3 percent. Utilities was the worst performing, dropping more than 2 percent.
The technology-heavy Nasdaq composite index fell 75.33, or 0.7 percent, to 11,073.31. Tesla dropped 1.1 percent, Apple lost 0.7 percent, Amazon was down 0.6 percent, and Google-parent Alphabet and Facebook-parent Meta each declined 0.1 percent. Netflix advanced 1.4 percent.
